GANGAMBIKA

INTRODUCTION

Gangambika(14th century AD) was a princess and  a poet of the Vijayanagara Empire at the present day Karnataka. She was the wife of Kumara Kampana, the noble son of the Vijayanagara king Bukka Raya.

Gangambika wrote the details about the victory of her husband, over the Muslims in Madurai in the form of a poem, which was known as Madhura Vijayam. She was an admirer of the famous Telugu poet Sri Tikkana.

Gangambika gave her husband a powerful sword and asked him to fight with the Muslim king, in order to safeguard the Madurai kingdom from attacks, and also to protect the famous “Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple”. Mata Gangambika was a pious and a chaste woman, and she can be compared with Mata Arundhati, consort of the famous Sage Vashista.

She was a devotee of Mata Durga and wrote many poems in praise of Ma Durga and sung in the temples. Some of the verses from her poems are as follows:

Oh! Devi Durga! You are the kind and the affectionate mother for the entire universe, and you are the consort of the great Lord Shiva! You have got great powers, and protecting the entire universe!

Oh! Devi Durga! You have destroyed the powerful demons and maintained peace and prosperity in the universe!

Oh! Devi Durga! You are containing many names, and by chanting your names, we would be                   relieved from our sins, and we would get SALVATION!

Oh! Devi Durga! You are bestowing boons to us! And you are living in our hearts for ever! You are helping us throughout our life!

Let us worship the holy mother Gangambika and be blessed.
